Now that you’ve got engaged, are you starting to look at engagement party venues in NYC?

Choosing the date is usually easy. However, finding somewhere in New York that fits your guest list, and also feels like the two of you, is what takes a lot more planning and deciding.

In this article we’re going to look at when to host your engagement party and what a venue costs in New York. Then we’ll look at the places you can hold one, with 25 venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn, and finish with some planning tips for the party itself to hopefully help you plan your engagement party with peace of mind.

Explore our Top Venues and find the perfect space!

When to Host Your Engagement Party

The engagement party usually comes a few months after the proposal: The Knot suggests hosting it two or three months after the proposal. For an engagement that’s shorter than a year, it suggests hosting within a month.

The Knot also notes that about 47% of couples get engaged between November and February, based on its 2025 Real Weddings Study.

If you put those two figures together, you can see that a lot of engagement parties will fall somewhere between January and April. With that in mind, if you’re hoping for a Saturday evening in February or March, we’d suggest sending your enquiry about two months ahead.

These days, plenty of couples host the party themselves. It’s also common for a parent or a close friend to host. Whoever hosts the party usually covers the cost.

When you’re writing the guest list, keep in mind that Emily Post’s advice is to invite only people who’ll also be invited to the wedding, since guests at an engagement party will naturally assume they’re on the wedding list, too!

So essentially, your engagement party list is a first draft of the wedding list. Later on, it’ll also give you a starting headcount for choosing a wedding venue.

Places to Hold an Engagement Party in NYC

When it comes to places to hold an engagement party in New York, a restaurant’s private room or a bar can work well for a smaller group. Another option is to hire a whole venue for the evening.

At Cocoon, we rent unconventional venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn by the hour, and every venue in this article comes from our own books. You’ll have the whole place to yourselves. You also get to choose the food and the music.

I’d start with the season. A brownstone with a backyard is lovely for a party in late spring or summer. In the colder months, I’d look at a townhouse with working fireplaces instead.

If you’d like a view, there are rooftops in both boroughs. For a bigger crowd, a cooking studio or a restaurant buyout gives you a proper kitchen and plenty of room.

Here’s a quick shortlist of the 25 engagement party locations below, sorted by guest count. I’ve also added the venues that run past 11pm, and the ones with step-free access.

What Does an Engagement Party Venue Cost in NYC?

Most of our venues price a private event by the hour, with a minimum booking of between four and ten hours. The hourly rate then rises with your guest count.

At Casa Olympia in Prospect Heights, for example, a party of 50 costs $695 an hour on a six-hour minimum. That comes to $4,170 for the venue, or about $83 a head.

For 60 guests at Casa Estrella in the East Village, the rate is $1,002 an hour, also on a six-hour minimum. That comes to $6,012, or about $100 a head.

Those figures cover the venue only. Cleaning is added on top, along with a fee for your Casa Manager, who is the member of our team on site for the party. Catering and the bar are budgeted separately.

It’s good practice to check where your headcount sits in each venue’s price tiers. At Casa Olympia, for example, a party of 44 is charged $645 an hour, and a party of 45 is charged $695.

If the budget is tight, I’d keep the party to the minimum booking and put the savings into the food!

The bar area at Casa FM includes a DJ booth and an overhead catwalk.

If none of these fit, the Discovery Portfolio is our wider network of unconventional venues that we don’t list publicly. It includes a historic Italian mansion on the Upper East Side and a two-level Tribeca penthouse of over 7,000 sq ft. There’s also a 15,000 sq ft warehouse studio in Brooklyn.

Planning Tips for Your Engagement Party in NYC

It’s good practice to settle the finish time early on. Residential venues in New York typically finish events by 11pm, in line with the Mayor’s Office guidelines.

If you’d like the party to go later, several of our commercial venues list hours until midnight, including Casa Janka, Casa Panorama, Casa Brutal and Casa Arbre. Casa Duende and Casa AdriĆ  both run until 2am.

If you’re planning to serve drinks in a venue without its own liquor licence, your caterer will need a Caterer’s Alcohol Permit from the New York State Liquor Authority. The permit covers one event only, and food has to be served at that event.

Pro tip: every booking needs a Certificate of Insurance, or COI. A COI is a short-term insurance policy that covers you for damage to the venue or injuries to guests during your party.

You’re renting a multimillion-dollar property, and a COI protects you for very little money. We can point you to affordable providers. A policy typically costs somewhere between $200 and $300.

If grandparents or older relatives are coming, it’s a good idea to check the stair count at each venue. The venues with step-free access are in the shortlist table above.

A lot of engagement parties fall between January and April. That can be a chilly time of year for a backyard or a roof. Our in-house event planning team, SuperConcierge, can coordinate beautiful tents and electric heaters for your outdoor space.

SuperConcierge can also arrange the caterer and the bar for you. If you’d like florals or a photographer, they can book those, too. On the night, your Casa Manager coordinates the vendors.

If you’re already sketching out wedding themes for 2027, the engagement party is a nice chance to try one out on a smaller scale. Lastly (but not least), several of these venues also suit the events that come later in the engagement, such as bridal showers and rehearsal dinners.

So, to sum up, I’d recommend that you settle your guest list and your date first. After that, you can shortlist two or three venues from the table above by size, and everything else will follow.

Whichever of these engagement party venues you choose, you’ll have a whole unconventional venue to yourselves for the evening. Get in touch with the team and we’ll let you know what we think is a good fit, based on availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do engagement party venues cost in NYC?

For a party of around 40 guests, private event rates on this list run from $382 an hour at Casa Simonds to $3,445 an hour at Casa Victoria. Minimum bookings run from four to ten hours. In the two examples above, the venue alone came to about $83 and $100 a head, before catering and the bar.

When should you have an engagement party?

The Knot suggests hosting it two or three months after the proposal. With so many couples getting engaged between November and February, a lot of engagement parties take place between January and April.

How many people should you invite to an engagement party?

There’s no set number. Emily Post’s advice is to invite only people who’ll also be invited to the wedding. For that reason, the engagement party list is often a little shorter than the wedding list.

How late can an engagement party go in NYC?

Residential venues typically finish events by 11pm. On this list, Casa Janka, Casa Panorama, Casa Brutal and Casa Arbre list hours until midnight, and Casa Duende and Casa AdriĆ  run until 2am.

Can we serve alcohol at an engagement party?

Yes, as long as your caterer has the right permit. In a venue with no liquor licence of its own, the caterer needs a Caterer’s Alcohol Permit from the New York State Liquor Authority. Each permit covers a single event where food is also served.

Will someone from Cocoon be on site?

Yes. A Casa Manager from our team is on site for every booking. Their role is coordination, covering your vendor arrivals and anything else that comes up on the night.
